Dodge Durango: A better Jeep Grand Cherokee? Or is it an afterthought for a good reason?

Its the highlander for people who want a HEMI. its a niche market. Typically speaking people in the market for a sensible 7 seat crossover are looking for the usual QDR and resale over cool and powerful. That being said its an excellent choice for the small family that has a lot of toys to tow and needs a 3rd row occasionally.

Alls I know about the Durango is that it's got an appearance package called "Brass Monkey".

hard pass, Without the Jeep flare it’s just another SUV. If I wanted seven seats of dread I’d get a Pilot.

It’s a modern Grand Wagoneer without having the benefit of a Jeep badge. Not really better or worse.
But here’s a hot take for ya: the Journey is 3/4 of a Durango.

Where else can you get a 6.4 Hemi in a minivan? These are epic
![]() 12/07/2018 at 14:01 |

yes but 6.4l v8 with nearly 500hp and 8700 lbs towing. and it certainly isn't bad looking.

Would you pay 64,400 for that though?
I know that if I was worried about towing, I’d get something built... tougher .

The expedition is also a big beasty. You don’t have to go full fat either you can get a loaded 5.7 AWD for $50,000 and still tow 7600 lbs and trash any fwd based crossover anyplace but fuel economy. Im not saying that makes up for it being a dodge, but aren’t you glad a choice in this market segment exists? You can, if you want, get a V8 RWD 7 seat midsized SUV for $47,000. Thats cool. Its not what most buyers want, but it is cool.
Plus like I said before its a LOT less vehicle to pilot around than an expedition for when you aren’t towing.

The Journey is 3/4 of a real car.

Dodge Durango: A better Jeep Cherokee?
There are a lot of things better than this mug:

We just bought a 2015 Durango SXT Rallye. We like it pretty well so far. I personally think they look very nice too. Muscular without being over the top. Honestly I think Dodge is doing that pretty well these days.

I meant to say better Grand Cherokee; editing now.

I think that my problem with the Durango is that it suffers from Wanna-Be Cop Syndrome here... courtesy of the Feds buying some for bulletproofing (the WK2 chasis is excellent for bulletproofing). FCA actually custom-delivers V8-RWD Grand Cherokees here just for that purpose! But my point remains.
About your comment... I mean, when you put it that way, it sounds like a competent vehicle, but I think that it still has many drawbacks compared to going bigger (like an expedition) or going smaller (A G. C. )

Only if you’re using the VW Routan as the ‘real car.’

The only Durango we will accept here.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about Dodge and currently own a nitro, They get down the road but its still a Dodge.

Dodge Durango: The new Jeep Wagoneer

It sucks to tow really heavy stuff with an Expedition. 6 mpg on a good day and Ford’s anti-sway setting (and the bloody thing turns on by default) actually causes sway when a weight distributing hitch is used. And encounter anything not resembling flat ground and prepare for the engine to jump past 3k rpm, produce a deafening roar, and watch your fuel gauge begin dropping right before your eyes.
And it’s not like they’re all that much better in quality. My mum’s Expedition has an dashboard computer issue where it doesn’t remember any setting you enter. Turn on automatic locking? Yep, it’ll forget it the moment you turn that key off. And we won’t talk about the tailgate’s paint peeling like it’s a Dodge Neon.
That said, I don’t have any other heavy duty vehicles to compare it to, so maybe all tow vehicles are like this?

I doubt the Durango is any better tbh.

Non starter for me was when they removed the transfer case 4x4 option and went to awd. Otherwise, would have preferred it for the wife over her 2018 GC.

Over-bulked minivan....
![]() 12/07/2018 at 17:57 |

Yeas it is better
1 because the interior is laid out better, but that is just my opinion
2 It never had that stupid shifter that literally killed people, instead it had the dial shifter for a few years which isn’t much better.
3 it has 3 rows of seating.

You can’t get a 5.7 HEMI, and a ZF gearbox in a polit.

I love mine. It’s absolutely brilliant. Not as massive as a Tahoe or expedition. It has excellent turning radius etc etc etc
And the pricing for them is so much more reasonable.

Is Dodge a dead brand?

I think it’s a matter of compromise. Sure the Durango isn’t better than an Expedition at towing, but it certainly beats it on the school run in terms of drive ability and economy. That’s where the Pilot beats the Durango, but again, the Durango can tow what the Pilot certainly can’t. It’s got a unique market share here in the United States for large families in suburbia it seems and I can see its appeal.

Should have bought a Chrysler, they’re good as dead :P
too bad there’s not a new Aspen

I see dozens of Durangos a d ay, I’d say they’re pretty successful. Rented a 2015 R/ T on Turo and that was a freaking blast

M y father-in-law got one last year - the lower spec Pentastar v6 one. It’s had some issues but he still loves it. Big but still easily driv able, 4wd for the snow they get, good commanding view. The goofy start/stop thing bugs me though....

We are on our second one of the current generation. All the functionality of a Tahoe for half the price. Yes it’s an old platform. Who cares, it has held up well and the lack of constant unnecessary updates have helped hold the price down. I just hope that they don’t ruin it with a front wheel drive based crossover redesign with a four cylinder engine that can’t tow shit. The market is already flooded with those.

It was on my last shortlist between a Durango R/T and the 4Runner I ultimately purchased. Ultimately, it came to price. The least expensive R/T I could get was $10k more than the 4Runner. Different beasts for sure, but I want to keep my note at 3 years for a reasonable dollar amount.
My neighbor has 2, a Citadel and an R/T. We do have a Grand Cherokee as well.

It’s the cheap(er) way to get one of these...
